“Raising the Pro Bono Bar” is an event targeted specifically to lawyers who have recently been called to the Bar, as a means to inform them about the opportunities for pro bono service as part of their career experience, and to provide a chance for them to meet representatives from various clinics and programs that are in need of recruiting new volunteer lawyers.

  • Oct. 31: Toll-free Law Call-In Day between 10 a.m.-4 p.m.for any Saskatchewan resident, co-hosted by the Canadian Bar Association (Pro Bono Committee and Young Lawyers and Saskatchewan Branch), Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan, and Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan (Province-wide)

CBA Pro Bono Committee and YL launch Pro Bono Call-in Day as part of National Pro Bono Week

An exciting new CBA Pro Bono Committee and YL initiative will be launched in Halifax and Regina to coincide with National Pro Bono Week, Oct. 25 - 31, 2009. Pro Bono Call-In Day will give people in Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan of limited means the opportunity to speak to a lawyer to ask their legal questions during specified times. The pilot project seeks to improve access to justice by providing pro bono legal services.

In Halifax, Pro Bono Call-in Day is Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The call-in number is 1.800.665.9779, or 902.455.3135 within HRM. This event is made possible by CBA Pro Bono Committee and YL, in partnership with the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia (LISNS).

In Regina, Pro Bono Call-in Day is Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The call-in number is toll free 1.877.569.8272. This event is made possible by CBA Pro Bono Committee and YL, in partnership with Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan and the Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan.

National Pro Bono Week event ideas:

  • During Pro Bono Week 2008, Pro Bono Law of BC organized:
    • A full-credit Pro Bono Practice CLE on skills and resources relevant to pro bono lawyers and poverty law practitioners.
    • Open-air pro bono legal advice clinics held at Victory Square Park.
    • A free non-profit law seminar for non-profit organizations of limited means.
    • A “Pro Bono Speed-Dating Session” that brought together representatives of law firms and non-profit organizations in order to foster new pro bono partnerships.

  • The National Pro Bono Resource Centre in Australia organized a national “Walk for Justice” in celebration of Pro Bono Day.
  • Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan extended the hours at the provinces free legal clinics during Pro Bono Week 2008.
  • Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon's Inner City coordinated an appreciation event for lawyers volunteering at a weekly free legal clinic in Saskatoon.
